How to Get Around the City

San Francisco is more walkable than you think, and has public transit that connects most major neighborhoods. Here are some tips about the various ways to get around!

Walking - If you pick things to do that are near to one another, walking can be a great way to save money and aggravation while seeing more of the city. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring layers, and avoid hills. The Mission, Downtown, piers, Richmond and Sunset are flatter, where Pacific Heights, Chinatown and around the Panhandle are hillier.

Driving - Driving works best if you're headed to somewhere outside of the central city, like Golden Gate Park or the Presidio (where our wedding will be!). In other areas, be prepared for some hairy traffic, especially downtown, in Northbeach and in the Marina. Be sure to think about where you will park, perhaps picking out a garage in advance or planning to target a few blocks outside of the main drag. Never leave anything in the car.

Public Transportation - If you're traveling between big neighborhoods, public transport can be an easy and cheap way to get where you're going. Each person traveling should get a clipper card; Google Maps is good at plotting a route. The 38 (Richmond to downtown) and 22 (Marina to Fillmore to Mission) run especially regularly between fun areas. BART also runs regularly and is very fast (Downtown to the Mission to South of SF). Public transportation isn't as useful in the parks, so we don't recommend this mode of transportation on our wedding day.

Uber and Lyft - Carshare services are pretty good in San Francisco, but a more expensive option. We recommend them especially for when you need to avoid walking, or if you're headed to an especially busy neighborhood like downtown, Fillmore, Chinatown or the Marina.
